About ROM

What is ROM?

Read-Only Memories was conceived as an online repository of thoughts, opinions and breakdowns regarding retro gaming that would otherwise reside in a discord server somewhere, half-baked and (even more) disjointed.

A big chunk of the above were related to the GBA, so that became the focus of the site.

All aspects of the site are the result of a one-man effort and that man would appreciate it if you could bear with him if something doesn’t work as expected!

Why GBA?

About a year after we had entered this millennium, my parents got me and my brother a Game Boy Advance. Wario Land 4 looked cutting edge to my eyes despite owning an N64 and shortly after, a PS2. What I didn’t understand at the time is that I was growing up during the 3D games arm race, past the time of the SNES and Mega Drive, so the second wind meaty 2D adventures got through the GBA looked like uncharted waters.

Great timing and nostalgia aside, it is also much easier to have conversations about retro handhelds and have people reference a shared common memory or pop in the cart and have practically the same experience you had when it came out.

Now let’s say you are talking about an N64 game. Did we both play the same version or are you imagining a relatively smooth Bomberman 64 playthrough and I am talking about the botched 50hz conversion? You may be itching to play Symphony of the Night but you may not have a 25-kilo CRT lying around.

So GBA it is.
